How to Submit

The Oakland Review publishes two literary journals each academic year: an alumni edition in the fall semester, and an undergraduate edition in the spring semester. For the fall issue, only alumni work will be considered. For the spring issue, only undergraduate work will be considered.

Currently, the Oakland Review is accepting submissions for the Fall 2016 Alumni Edition. Our submission deadline is tentatively set at October 21st. We prefer to receive submissions by this date, but if you require some extra time to submit your work, you may email the Oakland Review staff at oakland.review@gmail.com and we will attempt to accommodate you.

How to submit

Email your work as Word or RTF attachments to oakland.review@gmail.com.

  • Use your name and the genre(s) of the pieces in the subject line. (e.g. Poetry Submission: J. Smith)
  • In the body of the email, include:
    • Your name as you would like it to appear in print
    • Your phone number and preferred email address
    • A short biography (less than 100 words)
    • The titles and genres of the work that is attached

What you can submit

Any combination of the following:

  • Poetry
    • Submit 5 pieces or fewer
    • Do not double-space your poems
  • Prose
    • Submit 2 pieces or fewer
    • Each piece may be no longer than 20 pages of 12-point, double-spaced type
    • This genre includes fiction, creative non-fiction, screenwriting, and plays
  • Art
    • Submit 5 pieces or fewer
    • We prefer large JPEGs for evaluation, but also accept high quality PDFs, TIFF images and RAW images; if we select your work for publication, we will request a high-resolution image, preferably greater than 200ppi.
    • Artwork is evaluated for use as the issue’s cover as well as for a glossy insert in the middle of the magazine.

Rules:

FOR THE FALL ALUMNI EDITION:

  • Authors must have attended and graduated from Carnegie Mellon (or Carnegie Tech).
  • All work must be previously unpublished.
  • No simultaneous submissions.

FOR THE SPRING UNDERGRADUATE EDITION:

  • Authors must be undergraduate students at Carnegie Mellon (or have been during the current academic year).
  • All work must be previously unpublished.
  • No simultaneous submissions.

Process:

For both the alumni and undergraduate editions, our submission deadline is typically 1 month into the fall or spring semester, respectively.

For the alumni edition, we begin accepting submissions in July. The fall reading period is from September 10th to November 15th, and decisions are emailed in December. Journals are available on campus or by mail by the beginning of February.

For the undergraduate edition, we begin accepting submissions in November. The spring reading period is from January 30th to March 15th, and decisions are emailed in April. Journals are available on campus or by mail by the beginning of May.

The Oakland Review’s readers review all work anonymously.
